Bike Part Art Show

About the Show

Few events have as many exciting components as Neighborhood Bike Works’ annual Bike Part Art Show. The Art Show is a fantastic celebration of cycling as a green and healthy mode of transportation, local arts and artists, and innovative reuse of waste materials, all for the benefit of NBW’s youth bicycle education programs.

Every year since 2003, Neighborhood Bike Works has invited local artists to dig through our old parts bins for bits with artistic potential to use as the basis for works of art, or to create works otherwise celebrating bike culture. We then put on a show of the amazing results, which are sold in a silent auction to fund our free youth cycling programs and summer camp scholarships. It doubles as a great party!

The Bike Part Art Show began as the vision of Sue Ellen Klein, a founder of NBW, and artist Molly Mullahy, who shared a fondness for found-object art and the aesthetic quality of bicycle parts. While most participants are professional artists, the show draws work from cycling enthusiasts of West Philly's Bike Church co-op. The range of contributors reflects the democratic nature of cycling, an activity that trancends class and culture, whether for sport, recreation, a means of fitness, or a mode of transportation.

Ultimately, the Bike Part Art Show is about building community. It's about bringing people together to confirm our commitment to the youth in our neighborhoods and to those who work on their behalf. It is the recognition that art, however broadly defined, can change lives. - Sue Ellen Klein
