bike from 19th Century plans, and they're making a movie about it.
Email andy at neighborhoodbikeworks.org to find out how you can volunteer
or donate for this once-in-a-lifetime project.
Scribe documentary - Scribe Video Center is loaning tools and expertise
to make a documentary about our Haddington Neighborhood Shop. Email
mustafa at neighborhoodbikeworks.org to help.
Annual Charity Bike Build - Once again, NBW students will build a huge
number of bikes. Our partner, CH2M Hill, will give these as holiday
gifts to children in other areas of Philadelphia. Email
cat at neighborhoodbikeworks.org to apply to be a bike builder, or to help
chaperon the warehouse.
Wanted:
In addition to the usual, we need Work Study Students! Are you eligible
for State or Federal Work Study assistance? Are you a student of the
Art Institute of Philadelphia, or of the University of Pennsylvania? Do
you have experience working with youth, or with bicycles? Or do you
think you could do a better job with this newsletter, could keep the
website up to date, or could stand to file our mountains of dusty
paperwork?
AIPh students, contact your Student Employment Adviser for details; U
Penn students, see the SEMS website. Then send your resume and cover
letter, titled with your name and the position for which you are
applying, to andy at neighborhoodbikeworks.org. No calls or drop ins, please.
Are you a Student Employment Adviser or Off-campus WorkStudy Coordinator
at a school other than AIPh or UPenn? We want your brightest, most
energetic and self-directed students! Call 215.386.0316 or email
cuper at neighborhoodbikeworks.org to tell us how we can get them.

Earn-A-Bike Classes Are Underway!

skills and how to ride safely in the city. At the end of the class,
eligible youth earn a bicycle that they have reconditioned themselves,
along with a helmet and lock. Call 215-386-0316 or email
info at neighborhoodbikeworks.org <mailto:info at neighborhoodbikeworks.org>

opening at a workshop or school near you.

Adults & Volunteers
*Check out our website
<http://www.neighborhoodbikeworks.org/volunteer.html> for a complete,
regularly-updated list of volunteer opportunities!!!
*
Events and special programs. If you've read the rest of this email, you
know how many things are happening. Email
volunteers at neighborhoodbikeworks.org for a complete listing of volunteer
opportunities, or contact the project/event coordinator for those
mentioned here.
Earn-A-Bike volunteers needed in schools: This is a great opportunity to
learn basic mechanics or brush up on your skills. Volunteer at one of
our many Earn-A-Bike classes. Youth learn basic repair, job-related
skills and how to ride safely in the city. Classes usually meet twice a
week, from 4-6pm. The most helpful volunteers will commit to at least
one day per week for the duration of a class. There are tons of classes
going on all over Philadelphia, and we really need volunteers who can
travel to places other than the 40th St Shop. No bike repair experience
necessary. Please send Nadine an email at
volunteers at neighborhoodbikeworks.org
<mailto:volunteers at neighborhoodbikeworks.org> if you're interested.
Rewarding Opportunity to Direct Youth-Oriented Non-Profit: NBW is
searching for a few good board members. Growing beyond its original
"earn-a-bike" goal, NBW now offers a structured after-school educational
opportunity for scores of Philadelphia's youth. Serving young people
ages 10-18, NBW offers a chance to learn bicycle repair and earn a bike
through regular class attendance. Graduates have become program
instructors or retail shop mechanics. The board normally meets every
other month in University City. Please contact Executive Director Andy
Dyson at 215-386-0316 or andy at neighborhoodbikeworks.org
<mailto:andy at neighborhoodbikeworks.org> or Board President Leland Mayne
at leland at neighborhoodbikeworks.org
<mailto:leland at neighborhoodbikeworks.org> for more information or to apply.
The Divine Bike Church: NBW's volunteer-run repair co-op for adults at
the 40th Street Shop; directions are here
<http://www.neighborhoodbikeworks.org/contact/index.htm>. Stop by to
use our tools, purchased used parts and bicycles, and fix your bike with
help from our talented facilitators. Bike Church is open from 6:30-9pm,
four nights a week. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays open to all
adults. Wednesday nights open to women and trans people only.
Bike Church will be closed Thursday, November 22. We're not yet sure
about Sunday, November 25, so please call ahead (215.386.0316).
Monday Night Basic Repair for Adults: is taking a break for the
holidays. It's not too soon to sign up for the next session in January,
though. You can even *give the cyclist in your life a gift certificate
for our classes*! Gift certificates purchased by December 20th will be
good for classes offered January through June 2008; certificates
purchased later may not be processed till the new year. Email
info at neighborhoodbikeworks.org to learn more.
Watch this space for details on a *special class for BCP members* in
February 2008!
In this class, adults learn to patch a flat, overhaul a bearing system,
adjust brakes and shifting, and more. Tuition is $60 per series, or free
to active volunteers. Classes meet for four weeks from 6:30-9pm. No
drop ins; email repairclass at neighborhoodbikeworks.org
<mailto:repairclass at neighborhoodbikeworks.org> to enroll.
