Neighborhood Bike Works is hiring for a Lead Bicycle Mechanic for our North Philly shop, located at 1426 Susquehanna Avenue. Start date: March 22, 2010. NBW Summer Camp Registration Starting Soon!

Neighborhood Bike Works Summer Camp will soon start accepting applications for Summer 2010.

If you would like to receive an application for Camp, please call 215-386-0316 or send your mailing address to dcb@neighborhoodbikeworks.org.

We will hold four 2-week sessions this summer. Each session runs Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:00pm.

Dates for the 2010 NBW Summer Camp:

July 19 - 30

Session III
August 2 - 13

Session IV
August 16 - 27

Details

The fee for the 2-week camp session is $450 per child; scholarships are available. The fee includes breakfast and lunch every day at camp, as well as a bicycle, helmet, and bike lock for each camper to keep.

NBW is always in need of your generous donations — we can always use bicycles, bike parts and cycling gear, as well as computer hardware, office supplies and snacks for kids’ classes. Right now, we’re particularly in need of digital cameras - of any age or quality, as long they work! We’re also looking for a laptop computer and manila folders. March Adult Bike Repair Class starts Monday!

The March Adult Bike Repair Class starts on Monday, March 8, and will meet for 4 Monday evenings from 6:30-9:00pm (March 8, 15, 22 and 29). Lessons typically include going over parts of the bike and bike fit, care and feeding of your brakes and shifting, and an introduction to overhauling bearings. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes. The fee for the class is $60. Biking is good for us, good for the Earth, and plain fun

Inside the Academy of Natural Sciences, weighty topics were being hashed out - the design of cities, how we get around them, and how they make us feel.

Outside, David Bevacqua and Sean Betts were parking bikes. A lot of them.

In their free “valet” bike-parking area, a project of the Neighborhood Bike Works, about 50 sets of wheels were propped in racks.

Build Your Own Bike class POSTPONED!

The Build Your Own Bike class was postponed last weekend due to the snow. It will now start Sunday, February 14. Go here to sign up: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/95107.

Build Your Own Bike Class for adults meets for four Sunday afternoons, on February 14, 21, 28, and March 7, from 3:00 to 5:30pm. This class will lead you step-by-step through building your own bike. Bring your own bike frame and parts or purchase them from our selection of used frames and used & new parts. (Cost of bike frames and parts not included in class price.)

Tutors Wanted!

We’re starting our tutoring program for the Spring, and we’re looking for volunteers to tutor and provide homework help! This program will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7:30pm.

Tutors will meet students after the Earn-a-Bike class at our 40th St shop. The students range in age from 8 to 16 (mostly 10-12). Tutors would help students with their homework and other academic worksheets. The tutoring focuses on aiding academic progress for students enrolled in our Earn-A-Bike Program. The program is fun, educational, and valuable to the children who take part in it.

WHEN: Saturday, February 6th at 7pm. Snow or shine!

WHERE: 1205 S. 46th St @ Kingsessing (Andy Dyson’s House)

WHAT: It’s a potluck, so bring food or drink if you can, but it’s not required. There will be sushi, handmade by Andy, and beer.

Fix-A-Flat Fundraiser for NBW South Philly At Tattooed Mom’s

On Sunday, January 17th, NBW South Philly is holding a Fix-A-Flat Clinic/Mini-Fundraiser/Letterpress Craft Extravaganza at Tattooed Mom’s (530 South Street) from 1:00 to 5:00pm.

The wonderful proprietors of Tattooed Mom’s have opened their upstairs space for us to demonstrate how to fix a flat tire and get the word out about NBW South Philly’s continuing growth.
