First meeting for Cross-PA Multi-day Ride

By Timothy, November 12, 2009 5:45 pm

A message from Sergio Armani about the NBW’s Cross-PA Ride next summer:

We have scheduled our first meeting to plan next summer’s multiday, round trip ride to Harrisburg and I want to encourage you come! The meeting will be held on Tuesday, 11/17/09 from 7-9pm at Free Library of Philadelphia main branch.

Leland Mayne, NBW Board President, and David Cicero Bevacqua, Program Coordinator, will be at the meeting to answer any questions and to give us direction as to what will work best with the kids. During my latest meeting with David, he expressed that there are a number of kids that would like to ride with us and I’m excited to bring this aspect into the ride!

My vision for the committee is one that has us all working towards the same goal of having fun, while organizing a ride that is about the kids! While the overall mission is to raise funds and awareness for Neighborhood Bike Works, it is ultimately about the kids that NBW serves. I hope that we can keep this in mind and come together as one group with the ultimate mission of giving the children of Philadelphia and Norristown a Ride of Dreams!

Cross-PA Multi-day Ride! (Summer 2010)

Sergio Armani, a new volunteer here at Bike Works, is starting an effort to organize a multi-day ride next summer that will raise funds for and awareness of NBW.

The ride will be in the early summer, either from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (5 to 7 days) or round-trip ride from Philadelphia to Harrisburg (4 days) potentially including a rally/meeting with legislators in Harrisburg before our ride home.

We are looking for volunteers to join the planning committee – we’re in need of folks that can help with logistics, PR, fundraising, sponsor support and rider recruitment.

If you are interested, please contact Sergio Armani at 484-347-6429 / sarmani@hotmail.com or Leland Mayne (leland@neighborhoodbikeworks.org).

Do-It-Yourself Bike Bars

Adapted from Super Natural Cooking by Heidi Swanson (www.101cookbooks.com)

Grease a baking pan with coconut oil or coconut oil spray.  Use a pie pan or a loaf pan for this half recipe or a 9 x 13 pan for the full batch.

  • 1/2 c + 2 Tbs rolled oats
  • 1/2 c +2 Tbs chopped nuts
  • 1/4 c oat bran
  • 3/4 c unsweetened crisp brown rice cereal
  • 1/2 c dried fruit, chopped
  • 1-2 Tbs seeds, shredded unsweetened coconut, or crystallized ginger

Mix above ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

  • 1/2 c brown rice syrup
  • 2 Tbs natural cane sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp fine-grain sea salt

Combine the syrup, sugar, vanilla and salt in a small sauce pan over medium heat.  Stir constantly as it comes to a boil and thickens just a bit, about 4 minutes.  Pour over oat mixture and stir until it is evenly incorporated.

Spread the mixture into the pan and cool to room temperature before cutting to desired size.
