On the first Friday of each month, Old City’s art scene comes alive as galleries open their doors, musicians take to the street corners, and visitors flock from around the city. On Friday, April 2nd, 6:00-9:00pm, Dhyana Yoga will host the Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) First Friday Fundraiser at 68 N. 2nd St (near Arch).
The event will feature a “Yoga for Cyclists” class at 8:15pm ($5 suggested donation) taught by Trevor Dye, graduate of Dhyana Yoga’s teacher training. There will also be free refreshments and snacks, an information booth with NBW staff members, and a yoga and bike-themed raffle. Prizes include gift certificates for individual yoga instruction, a bike repair class, and bicycle-themed artwork. All proceeds will go to NBW’s mission of increasing opportunities for youth through bicycling.
NBW needs volunteers to promote the programs at the Endurance Sports Expo this weekend. This is a fun exhibition that I dare say a lot of our volunteers will be attending anyway. If the weather is bad it’s a good thing to do if you’re not willing to ride in the rain!
There will be dozens of bike and bike part manufacturers. To find out more about the event, check out the link below.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Neighborhood Bike Works will celebrate MLK Day 2010 as an opportunity to work hard, make change and bring people together. This will be an all-day event held on Monday, January 18th, 2010 at our our three shops: 40th Street, Haddington and North Philadelphia/Temple.
Each year, Neighborhood Bike Works holds a Service Party on MLK Day to fix-up and organize its offices and bike shops while also reflecting on what the day stands for. This year, we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of this event at the 40th Street Headquarters.
The Bicycle Club of Philadelphia and
REI are generously sponsoring the event. At 12:30PM at 40th st, REI will present Neighborhood Bike Works with a grant to support our Mountain Bike Club and Earn-a-Bike program.
Volunteers can sign up for one or both time slots:
10:00 am – 1:00 pm and/or 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Breakfast and lunch will be provided!
The time you’ll be spending with us on that day will be dedicated to overhauling our shops (multiple, fun, projects including painting signs, construction, sorting parts, and cleaning). To register for the event or to find out more, send an email to volunteers@neighborhoodbikeworks.org. Please include your full name, a telephone number where you can be reached and preference of time and place in the email. Neighborhood Bike Works was lucky to have the opportunity last week to bring twenty NBW youth and family members to the UniverSoul Circus at the Mann Center in Fairmount Park. Instructor Cat Bergeron led the trip. Nine youth rode to the Mann Center with Cat and one of our dedicated volunteers, while eleven more youth and family members met the NBW contingent at the event.
Thanks to Representative Vanessa Lowry Brown for making this trip possible by donating free tickets to NBW!
Here’s a note from one of the kids who went on the trip:
Thank you for giving me and my grandmother tickets to go to the UniverSoul! Circus. My favorite part was the magic and the contortionist. They were so flexible they made my neck hurt. We had a good time.
A message from Sergio Armani about the NBW’s Cross-PA Ride next summer:
We have scheduled our first meeting to plan next summer’s multiday, round trip ride to Harrisburg and I want to encourage you come! The meeting will be held on Tuesday, 11/17/09 from 7-9pm at Free Library of Philadelphia main branch.
Leland Mayne, NBW Board President, and David Cicero Bevacqua, Program Coordinator, will be at the meeting to answer any questions and to give us direction as to what will work best with the kids. During my latest meeting with David, he expressed that there are a number of kids that would like to ride with us and I’m excited to bring this aspect into the ride!
My vision for the committee is one that has us all working towards the same goal of having fun, while organizing a ride that is about the kids! While the overall mission is to raise funds and awareness for Neighborhood Bike Works, it is ultimately about the kids that NBW serves. I hope that we can keep this in mind and come together as one group with the ultimate mission of giving the children of Philadelphia and Norristown a Ride of Dreams!
